Qualifying To Sell Organic Tomato Seeds

When thinking of growing organic tomato seeds whether in a home vegetable garden or as an organic grower, these need to be sourced from a supply which is certified as being organic. To understand what this type of growing is, it is where there has been no use of artificial fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides or anything else artificial put into the growing of the crop.

It can take many years to qualify for this type of status and during this time the property has to go through a period called pre conversion. This period is for the soil where the organic produce will be grown in the future, to go through a cleansing where the contamination from artificial product use is finally eliminated.

Even the water that is used has to go through a checking process for artificial contaminants, if this appears likely then it must be rectified if the test is a positive. Any contamination needs to have a period of time to allow for the soil to be returned to its natural state where it will be used for growing this type of produce.

Anyone embarking on a project of this kind needs to develop a management plan which will help with any changes that are necessary. These plans once developed are put into practice and used over a period of time during the pre-conversion process, this is the usual practice where a grower wants to grow produce under the certification rules.

If a farmer wants to grow other crops this practice may be allowed providing these crops are not grown on the same land as the organic produce. The crops also have to be unrelated, and it must be demonstrated that there will be no risk of any cross contamination occurring from the inorganic plants.

Records must be kept and these need to be of the cropping history, soil testing, fertilizer use which must be of an organic nature regardless of whether it is animal manure or mulch type hay or other products. Diseases and pest need monitoring and records also kept, and there are a certain number of other records which a certified professional may need to see during a visit.

When all the levels of this process of conversion are complete, then a grower is able to put his produce such as the tomato seeds on the market for sale. The public is able to buy with confidence knowing that these seeds are exactly what they are stated as being.
