Aquaponics: Five Points of Interest


Although setting up an aquaponic system is a very simple task, it may require some basic knowledge of aquaponics. If you have decided to install your own aquaponic system you probably have at least a small amount of knowledge already and may find this information useful. Here are five essential items you may find interesting and that may aide you in obtaining great results.

Location: A room naturally illuminated by sunlight would provide the perfect location and lighting for the fish and plants in your aquaponic system. The room should also be moderately heated in order to obtain optimal results. The location of the aquaponic system is highly important to the development of the fish and plants.

Oxygenizing the water: To keep your fish comfortable and content, their water must be oxygenized daily. Having pleasant living conditions for the fish can only complement the success of your system.

Selecting Your Fish: Fish that will work well in the aquaponic system are almost countless but in some states there are restrictions. It is advisable to remain within the legal scope by contacting the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in your area concerning the fish species you want to use.

Placing the Pots Conveniently: If bending is difficult for you, you will find that the versatility when setting up your aquaponic system is one of its great advantages. You can place your grow beds or the entire system at waist level or whatever level is convenient and comfortable for you. This placement makes the daily care routine a much easier activity.

Adding Additives: If you find that your fish are not providing all the nutrients your plants need you may have to supply them with the respective substances. In most cases you will may to add iron, calcium carbonate or potassium carbonate.

Aquaponics is a simple activity which will provide you with the fresh vegetables and fish in a short period of time. The aforementioned tips will help you to achieve success in the production of your own organic garden.
