Most people who work in an office environment have found it beneficial to have a plant or several plants on their desk. Many corporations who have offices have found that the employees in the office work more efficiently when plants are placed in the offices. Placing the plants in the office is one thing, insuring that they grow and thrive is another. This is where office plant maintenance comes in.

Many companies who have plants in the offices don't own the plants. The plants are leased from another company who will provide the plants but will also come in and feed, water, prune and replace any plants that become sick. This use of a horticultural company to provide plants in the office releases the company of the necessity to maintain the plants through the use of in house staff and the replacement of plants on a regular basis.

Plants that are provided by employees for desktop of file cabinet top use must be maintained too. The owner of a plant in an office environment who cares for their plant has a plant that is thriving and adds to the dcor and harmony of the office. Care should be taken in selecting plants for the office environment. Brighter lighting in an office necessitates a plant that will tolerate bright lighting. Conversely should the office lighting be dim, a plant must tolerate low amounts of lighting.

The amount of water provided to a plant in the office must also be considered and the amount of water is just as important as the amount of light. Knowing when a plant is in need of water is made simple through the use of a water meter. These meters are readily available and keep track of the moisture content of the soil that the plant is in. The proper amounts of both light and moisture provide attractive plants in the office environment.

Common office plants that are found around employee desks include several varieties of ivy, wandering jew, spider plants and dieffenbachia. All of these plants are common house plants however all of them can thrive in the office environment given the correct amounts of light and water.

The modern office is quite often filled with fax machines, printers and copiers. All of these machines use toner, which can gas off harmful substances. These electronic devices along with the drywall that makes up the walls of the office can and often do emit odors or substances that can be harmful to both the building and its occupants. Plants placed in and around the office act as natural air filters and remove these harmful substances. The plants replace these harmful substances with humidified oxygen. The combination of filtering and oxygen generation by the plants helps maintain the building and keep it from becoming a sick building. The plants can't perform these services without an office plant maintenance program. The office plant maintenance program will help keep the plants in the best of health, which will help both the office and the employees in the office.
