Understanding The Recent Growth Of Organic Farming

The practice of using natural methods and techniques for farming is one that has been around for a very long time. It was not until a few decades that the name, organic farming was used and even then, it was not very popular. This was treated more as a passing fad and limited to only very few farmers with little plots for cultivation.

This shift began in the early 1980s but was not popular then and was relegated to only a handful of small scale farmers. However, in the later decade, an increase in the demand for these products caused a change in perspective and more farmers began to employ these methods in their crop cultivation.

Some of those who got in on this form of farming did so because they were looking for a means of spreading the risk factor associated with their business and needed to diversify. However there were a lot more who decided to concentrate wholly on growing crops through natural means.

These methods involve several techniques especially water conservation. Others include crop rotation, green manure use and mulching on the soil surface, amongst others. These are used not just in maintaining good soil structure but also in pest control.

In contrast, the use of artificial fertilizers and other chemicals in pest control does not only cause damage to the soil, these chemicals often remain on the top soil and are washed into lakes, rivers and other water ways leading to severe pollution in some cases. Also, they find their way into food and cause health problems when the food is eaten.

The benefits of cultivating crops in an organic manner are numerous and a lot of growers are beginning to discover that. It is a form of farming that is very profitable because the farmer makes use of what is already available and has little need to spend money. The demand is high and it leaves the soil healthier and the water cleaner.
