How Anthurium Farmers Raise Anthurium Plants

Throughout Hawaii, raising anthurium blooms is a big industry. Anthuriums are grown on more than 200 professional facilities. A number of these facilities have been in operation since the 1950s, which had been the decade which cultivators first started cultivating anthuriums commercially. Continue reading and I will describe the anthurium farming methods that these facilities use to grow large amounts of anthurium blooms.

The first step in cultivating these types of blooms commercially is constructing a shade house. The intention of the shade building is to give shade to the flowers that will be raised in it. The reason why shade is vital to cultivating anthuriums is that these kinds of plants would tend to get burnt by the sun if they were to be situated in direct sunlight. To construct a shade structure, the parcel on which it's going to be built will need to be graded and cleared using a bulldozer. Soon after the area is flattened off, galvanized pipes are set in place. These pipes are employed as posts to hold up the cables and shade material which are employed to build the shade building.

Soon after the shade house is finished, volcanic cinder or other cultivation material is dispersed on the floor of the shade structure using tractors. The cinder typically comes from volcanic cinder cones and is brought to the facility in large dump trucks. Typically a covering of cinder approximately a couple of feet thick is placed on the ground of the shade house.

When the cinder is in place, anthuriums are acquired. They can originate from top cuttings of older plants in other parts of the facility or they can be the result of vegetative propagation. They're then planted within the shade house.

Typically, Hawaii's regular rain showers supply adequate water for these plants. But, whenever rainfall is inadequate the anthurium plants might be watered by means of overhead sprinklers.
