Fish emulsion is a type of organic liquid fertilizer made from fish waste. While fish emulsion can be produced from many different types of fish (including wild caught salmon), a small fish called Menhaden is the most common source of this liquid fertilizer. An oily, bony fish with little edible meat, Menhaden comes from the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.

With summer in the West, your garden will soon show how well you've taken care of your soil. If you have plenty of humus in it, there will be plenty of moisture to keep everything growing fine without constant watering in spite of the heat.

If the winter soil mounds are left around old rose plants until early April, small shoots begin to develop under the protective soil. The danger in this is that the shoots may be broken when the hill is removed and the already growing plant will be set back if a late freeze occurs.
