Seaweed Fertilizer Makes a Nutritious Treat For Your Garden

For as long a time as humans have sown and reaped, fertilizer has had a role in farming. Innumerable types of fertilizer have been tested in the quest for a bigger and higher quality crop. A few of them have been more successful than others. As peculiar as it might appear, seaweed fertilizer is one of the most valued methods to improve soil quality.

Seaweed fertilizer has been in use in coastal regions throughout the world for hundreds of years. In England, in the Channel Islands, there is actually a trade exclusively dedicated to harvesting and drying seaweed. It's used in a range of products, including garden fertilizer.

In Ireland, seaweed also enjoyed popularity as an effective fertilizer. The dirt would be lifted up in rows, the seaweed put down, and then the earth would be replaced. While it's not as popular these days, this was the normal system for sowing and growing potatoes in that nation. Even today, the coastal industries of Ireland gather large quantities of seaweed and kelp.

Seaweed is an extremely valuable approach to improve the soil quality of a garden. The explanation behind this is that the large bodies of water that are home to seaweed have every element known to mankind. Seaweed absorbs these elements and transfers them to the soil when you add it to your garden.

Environmentally conscious gardeners are particularly attracted to seaweed fertilizer. The reason for this is that it is an organic product derived from plants, and can enhance the soil in combination with other forms of natural fertilizer. There's no downside to it as there is with many of the chemical laden commercial fertilizers. These products frequently contain uncertain ingredients. And the manufacturing process is linked to high levels of contamination.

Seaweed fertilizer can be added straight on to the earth, similar to mulch. Place it around and in between the plants. You'll find that it breaks down very quickly.

You can also incorporate it in your compost pile. It will add nutrients and help to break down the other ingredients in the mix. In addition, both the powder and liquid types can be made into a tea-like solution. Then you gently spray the mixture on the leaves, thus providing them with an easily available source of nutrition.

The history of seaweed as a fertilizer goes back innumerable years, everywhere during the globe. If you're fortunate enough to live near a large body of water, you can probably find it at the water's edge. However taking a trip to a nearby nursery is an option for pretty well everyone. Ask for kelp meal or other kinds of seaweed fertilizers. And when you're there, ask them to give you some strategies on how to add it to your garden to give it new life.
