My Precious Garden

I am more passionate about working in the garden, unlike my husband who does it indifferently.I just love being outside no matter what I am doing or what the task.We have a big yard with lots of the most beautiful oak and pine trees, and there is always work to do cleaning up.In the last few years we have had a lot of storms that have resulted in debris all over the yard so clean up has been somewhat of a challenge. Me and my husband are just thankful that we have the solution (the ones we bought from the hardware that is) to our problems. We didn't have to worry anymore of cleaning up and compromising our not so young bodies. You can say that the weed eater, leaf blower and the chain saw are the most overworked tools that we have. The recent storms brought down lots of our trees. The trees were ruined, it made two out of one, leaving the trunk behind. The tree trunks that remained became my husband's little project. He made them into totem poles, carving some faces and animals with the help of a chain saw.

Years ago when my parents first moved here, my mother planted a Wisteria vine in the yard. When my parents passed away, they left me the house. Everything here is special. For me, the house and the yard have a sentimental value. But I also inherited the problems of an older house and a yard overgrown with over 40 years worth of leaves, pine straw and wisteria that has literally taken over everything. I use both leaf blower and weed eater in cleaning up the yard. With wisteria, nevertheless, is quite difficult. To remove all the withering and damaged vines, the roots must be included and you may find it for yourself if ever you have one at your yard, how taxing it can be.Using poison is out of the question because I am a purist in that respect.I love the birds and the wildlife that come into the yard to forage for tasty morsels of fresh greens.I want them to be healthy, too.

Since it's the middle of the summer season, and the yard needs our immediate attention, we try to safeguard ourselves as possible as we can from the blistering heat. The summers are hot and humid, always and sometimes so, it is best to just stay in. August, I believe, is the month that I hate the most because I can't stay outside for too long to enjoy what's out there due to the intolerable heat.

About 400 people die every year from heat stroke. Here's a tip, whenever you go outside of the house especially this summer, be certain to hydrate yourself often.Drink plenty of good quality water, stay inside during the hottest part of the day, take frequent breaks, wear lightweight, light colored loose clothing, and wear a hat that has a good ventilation design. You cannot separate from me my bottle of water, my hat, my sunglasses and my diluted peppermint spray whenever I am out in the yard working. They always stick with me.I work in the early morning or late evening hours, am sensible and know when to stop and cool off.

After we finish weed eating, leaf blowing and trimming the broken tree limbs, it will be time to start all over again in the Autumn, which is just around the corner. Nevertheless, it doesn't tire me because I love having Autumn. There is always a reason for me to stay in my garden!
