Puppies enjoy digging. Turn over some soft dirt in your yard to begin a garden or plant a rosebush and the digging never seems to stop. It can be frustrating to contend with a dog that digs. Digging can be good for your dog. It is crucial for him to dig around and engage his curiosity, however, it is important for you to have a decent yard also. You must both be able to find a happy medium in regards to his digging. That may well mean that you want to stop the behavior for good and that is okay.

Dogs sometimes dig because of boredom. They crave entertainment. He may be experiencing separation anxiety because you are away. Maybe he istrying to dig out an escape route so he can get out of the yard. He may even be digging because of something as simple as controlling his own temperature. He may be too hot and trying to cool down or he may be too cold and trying to get warm.

You can get your dog to reduce or even halt his digging behavior. First make sure that he has plenty of time with you and gets enough exercise and playtime. You can also make sure that he has toys that he enjoys. Often dogs will try to bury bones so if you give your dog bones to chew on make sure you replace them with chew toys or rawhide bones.

You can use a clicker to train your dog not to dig. Watch your dog and when he starts to dig just use the clicker to distract him and give him a command that means "no". When he quits digging reward him with a treat. It will take consistency but clicker training can be very effective for dealing with digging.

You can also try to stop your dog from digging by filling up his hole with undesirable things. Dogs like to dig in clean dirt so if you fill up his hole with rocks or twigs and even his own poop it can stop him from digging more. You could also try to bury a balloon that will pop when he starts to dig. That will frighten him but it won't hurt him and it will probably stop him from digging more.

You should try to make a spot in your yard specifically for his digging. This will take the most time and patience but it may be the best answer if your dog is just a natural digger. You can lessen your dogs digging behavior with some time and patience but be gentle because he is just being a dog.
