Do I Need To Apply For Garden Planning Permission?

Many people each year need to apply for garden planning permission but for some buildings this is not necessary. Before you fill in the forms and apply read the below to see if this is actually required by law or not.

This can be extremely costly and time consuming so it is always best to know exactly what is allowed, what is required to do so and how to go about it. The first port of call will be speaking to your local planning team.

The general rule is that if you are building a very large building or even a tall greenhouse or shed type building then it it highly likely that you will require garden planning permission. It is however not always based on the size of the building, and sometimes the purpose of its intended uses.

Sometimes even a greenhouse will need planning permission, specially if it is to sell products for a business and to make a profit. Granny flats or annexes where you intend for someone to always live do need planning permission. If they are only small or not intended for permanent use then they may not.

If there are any situations when you are not sure if you need to apply for permissions or not then also speak to your local authorities about garden planning permission. Some building companies will even deal with this process for you for an extra fee.

Should you ever be in doubt, always speak to your local authorities as a first port of call. To not obtain the relevant permissions and then have to pull of the work down will be time consuming, stressful and unnecessary. A fine could also be implied and if you have been denied permission but still choose to build, this fee could very quickly become extremely high.
