Top Home Based Ventures: Candle Making As A Business

Men and women all over the world are jumping on this hot industry: candle making as a business. In this world of high stress, candles have become much more of a spiritual accessory than just decoration. Sales in candles have skyrocketed since focus has been placed on stress relief, relaxation and home spa treatments.

Since the unemployment rate is very high and jobs are so very hard to come by, the home based business may well be the answer. There is a continued growth spurt of start up companies with particular success around a product-producing business. An enterprising spirit can pull one out of the economic slump.

Of the more popular home based businesses, candle making is near the top of the list. This year, candle sales are expected to be over 2.3 billion. This does not include all the accessories that go along with candles either. This is also a very easy product to make, and quite fun so long as you don't mind the mess.

There are a few things one will need to have access to. The first is space. Remember, hot wax is used in candles and it is likely to be messy, especially when you are first learning to work with it. It is highly advised to not use one's kitchen. If an area in a garage or spare room can be dedicated to the production, that is best.

Second are the materials needed. The relatively short list of wax (by the pound), wicks and wick holders, colored wax chips, perfumed oils, a solid good pot to heat the materials, a thermometer and votive molds will send you on your way. It can be quite fun to keep an eye out for pretty little jars or unusual items that can be used as holders. Remember to be creative and make candles that you would want to buy.

Next, one must learn how to make candles of course. Many successful candle makers learned from a how-to book. There are often workshops offered in community centers but reading a book is a fine place to learn. The process is just like following a recipe for cooking. Once you gather all the ingredients and heat them up all together, it is just a matter of getting the hang of shaping the wax around the wick.

Best to start off this fun business with a little start-up advice. It takes about a year of commitment to hard work, energy and money to turn a real profit. Give it time to grow and have fun at the same time.
