Halloween Crafts for Outdoor Decorations

Kids love to decorate for Halloween but many items can't withstand the weather outside. Rain, wind and sometimes snow can damage many home-made decorations. Here are three that will survive the weather to 'haunt' again next season.

Potting Plant Pumpkins

Items Needed

Orange Potting Plants (terra cotta or other)

Pencil

Scissors

Card stock

paper - any color

Yellow paint, green paint

Mod-Podge Outdoor

Short Stick

Step 1: Cut the paper so it is the same height as the planter pot.

Step 2: Sketch the 'face' of the pumpkin onto the paper. Cut out the nose, eyes and mouth - or whatever pattern is desired.

Step 3: Invert the pot on a flat surface before continuing. Tape the cut paper tightly around the pot. Paint over the template with the yellow paint and allow the paint to dry.

Step 4: Remove the template and touch up any areas as needed with the yellow paint. Insert the stick into the hole in the 'top' of the pumpkin and paint the stick green. Paint the top of the pot green also if desired. This represents the stem of the pumpkin.

Step 5: Paint the entire pot and stick with Mod-Podge Outdoor to seal the paint and weatherproof the pot. Set the finished 'pumpkin' it outside for decoration.

Spirit Luminaries

Luminaries have become popular for many different occasions and this twist creates a spooky decoration that can help guide trick-or-treaters along a sidewalk or driveway.

Items needed:

Clean milk cartons

White paint

Black marker

Craft Knife

Low wattage light bulbs

Duct tape

Step 1: Paint the outside of the cartons white.

Step 2: Draw faces on the painted cartons with the black marker

Step 3: Cut out a hole in the back of each milk carton, toward the bottom, to insert the lights

Step 4: Insert the lights into the carton and position a light so it is the pupil of each ghost eye. Secure the lights in place with the duct tape.

Step 5: Turn on the lights and check for placement.

This craft can be modified with orange paint to create pumpkins or any color to create monster heads. Be creative and use your imagination to create unusual faces.

Hanging Ghosts

Many people enjoy hanging items from trees to decorate for various holiday seasons. For Halloween kids can make these simple ghosts to hang from tree branches.

Items needed:

White vinyl tablecloth

Tape measure

Scissors & Newspapers

Black permanent marker

Craft wire

Step 1: Lay the white vinyl tablecloth on a flat surface. Cut it into rectangles 8 inches by 6 inches.

Step 2: Draw a different face in the center of each rectangle, for the ghost face.

Step 3: Crush sheets of newspaper into fist sized balls. Position a ball of newspaper under a ghost face and wrap the vinyl around this 'head' of the ghost. Tie in place with craft wire underneath the chin of the ghost.

Step 4: Cut a length of craft wire about 12 inches long. Poke the wire through the head of the ghost and center the ghost on the wire. Fold the wire up and use it to attach the ghost to the tree.

Make these crafts with your kids and create some Halloween memories as you make decorations at the same time.
