Some gifts are just impossible to buy; a birthday gift for the friend-who-has-everything; anniversary gifts, especially ones close to birthdays or Christmas; fathers day gifts - oh go on admit it, fathers day gifts are a nightmare, after socks, ties and aftershave, what's left?? Sometimes there isn't an occasion at all and you just want to cheer someone up or let them know how much you love them.

Well fear not, there's a secret to buying the perfect gift for impossible occasions such as these. It's dead simple and honestly, it works every single time without fail. Want to know what it is? It's... nothing.
That's right, don't buy them a present at all; at least, not one that you can wrap. Instead, do something to make them smile. Make them laugh! Show them how much you love them in a way that no gift-wrapped trinket ever could. It's not as difficult as it sounds - in fact, it's a lot easier than trawling the shops looking for the perfect impossible present!
If you put a bit of thought and a bit of time in, you'll be able to give them something that's worth far more than money and make them feel far more special than any random gift you've bought because you were struggling to find something suitable.
It could be that you spend that time making them something. Utilise the skills you have. If you're handy with a sewing machine, whip up a unique shopping bag or an item of clothing. If you're skilled at carpentry, whittle a simple chess set or make a memories box. If words are your thing, write a story about a time you spent together, print it onto square heavy stock card and turn it into an arty looking print. These aren't the best examples but only you know what your skills are and what your special person will appreciate - use your imagination!
Alternatively spend your time actually doing something together. Spending time with someone is the best way to make them feel special and it doesn't have to be expensive. If there's something they like doing you could make the effort to get involved and share the experience. No random off-the-shelf fathers day gifts will ever compare to spending time with your dad, playing golf or going to the football. For friends you could take a disposable barbeque and a bottle of wine to the woods or surprise them with a picnic on the beach. For a romantic experience with your loved one you could build a campfire and take along a flask of warm cider, marshmallows for toasting and write down your hopes for the future before casting them into the fire.
If all that fails or is too impractical, maybe because of time or distance, there is one last failsafe way of making someone smile and letting them know that you're thinking about them - have fresh flowers delivered to their door. Seriously, it sounds cheesy and maybe seems like a last minute thought (although next day flower delivery is extremely useful when you've left it a bit late!) but have you ever opened the door to see the local florist standing there with a big bunch of flowers and not immediately burst into a massive smile? There's just something about a beautiful big bouquet that's guaranteed to warm the cockles.
Whether you have the time to spend in advance, plan a shared experience or simply go with the next day flower delivery and have beautiful fresh flowers delivered, hopefully that impossible gift doesn't seem so impossible after all!
