Bacteria and viruses can attack fresh cut flowers as they would attack any one of us. Mixed flowers in a vase pass viruses to each other. Just like we pass viruses or the flu to each other.

Any leaf of a flower that is submerged or touches water will rut. This rutting produces bacteria that will kill your flowers. If the vase water is not changed frequently a slimy substance (Bacteria) surrounds the end of the stem and flowers will be deprived of water and food. That beautiful flower arrangement that you just spent $200 dollars for is ruin in a day or two. Because the flower shop that you bought your flower arrangement at was not careful when he or she was putting together your flower arrangement.
Do not keep fruits and vegetables close to your fresh flowers. Most fruits and vegetables produce gases that are very harmful to flowers, and make them wilt and die faster. To prevent any of these things from happening, change the vase water as frequently as you can (once a day is great, once every three days is the longest you wait to change your flowers water). If you take a little time to take care of your flowers, your flowers will last much longer.
I made the big mistake of putting my flowers next to my bowl of fruit and even though I left my flowers next to my bowl of fruit for only a short time. The gases from the fruit cause bacteria to grow on my flower arrangement killing them the next day. I was sad and angry! Never keep your flowers next to a bowl of fruit or any fruit period.
This is how you avoid having your flowers killed by a virus. Wash the vase with some bleach. Bleach kills any bacteria that are clinging to the vase. Add acids to the water right away. A table spoon of lemon juice or vinegar, couple a drops of Listerine will keep the water fresh and bacteria free. Your flower will last much longer.
Talk with your local florist about any concerns you may have with your flowers. A Florist is very knowledgeable about flowers and that can really help you avoid making big mistakes with your flower arrangements. Ask around with all the local florist in my city I ask the same questions to three or four florist.
