Poinsettias should be included in every holiday decorating plan. They provide a lot of bang for the buck. They're inexpensive, widely available, and add great color to the holidays. To help them last through the holidays, follow these simple rules: Keep them in a brightly lit area, keep them moist but not soggy, and protect them from sudden temperature changes. For the best display use larger poinsettias by themselves or create groupings of smaller ones.
Christmas cactus is another favorite during the holiday season. Actually they've been a favorite houseplant for decades. They're easy to find and easy to keep. Just make sure they're in bloom, or nearly so, when purchased. These plants are tropical in nature, they're not from the desert as the cactus name suggests. They don't link sudden temperature changes any more than poinsettias do. Keep the soil from getting too moist as over-watering can cause flowers to drop.
There are dozens of ways to create a beautiful centerpiece. The traditional centerpiece is made with either 1 fat candle or 3 slim candles of different heights. Place these in a tray and add greenery to suit. Spruce, white pine, juniper and hemlock are choices that provide a great effect. If you don't have access to these, consider ivy or holly. Now add pine cones, berries, or ribbons and a sprinkling of fresh flowers.
if needed, alter the size of the container to fit the size of the arrangement. Consider a decorated box, a vase, a bowl or a basket as a container. One idea might be a glass bowl filled with white lilies and a few red roses to set them off would be a simple and elegant arrangement. Another possibility is a bowl of red roses, clusters of red berries, plain gold tree ornaments and maroon velvet ribbon.
While red and white are traditional colors they're not the only colors available. Silver and gold are just as traditional and look fabulous with white. You might go with silver and light blue for a wintery look. Or go non-traditional with a blue and purple color scheme. Remember to keep your arrangements away from heat sources such as heating vents, televisions and other electronics as the heat can quickly dry them out. If you use candles, never leave them burning unattended.
These ideas only scratch the surface. Search for inspiration online. Check out several florists websites. Pick a style, choose your flowers and colors, and select a container and accents. Run by the local florist for the flowers. Then gather a few friends and family to share the creativity and create extra holiday cheer.
