Creating attractive flower arrangements

Nature created a thing of beauty when it came to flowers and it is this appearance that has attracted man to the decorative nature of blooms for many years. In the wild, flowers use their colours and scents to attract insects in order to pollinate and it is these features that make flowers so special to people.

Flower arranging is an art, one that florists are highly skilled at, in order to make the finished creation appear effortless and as natural as possible. Different varieties carry different perfumes and florists are adept at matching complementing scents within a bouquet. The same applies to the overall look of an arrangement, as certain flowers blend well with others to create a stunning impact.

The symbolic nature of flowers is understood by many, particularly florists, who strive to deliver the most apt arrangement for each occasion. Weddings, funerals, births and christenings are flooded with flowers, demonstrating the relationship the flower has with life, be it at the beginning or at the end.

Poppies are used to commemorate death, particularly as a symbol for those soldiers who were lost at war and irises and lilies symbolise resurrection and life and hence are common at burials. The opening of their petals is associated with stars and the sun shining down to light the way forward.

Daisies are used to represent innocence as spring unfolds and are a good choice for christenings. Roses are a common feature in bridal bouquets, symbolising love, passion and beauty. It is no accident that there are more roses sold by florists on Valentine's Day than any other variety -a flower delivery of roses is common all year but especially so on February 14th. Men also tend to give more flowers to ladies, confirming the femininity of flowers.

Other occasions when the popularity of flowers soars includes Easter and Christmas, Mothers Day, birthdays, anniversaries, leaving parties and any occasion which leads to celebration. Moving into a new home is often accompanied by florists making a flower delivery or at the start of a new job. Flowers often take over the house of someone recovering from an illness, as well-wishers send them by the van load in an attempt to brighten the day of the poorly person, while expressing their wish that they get well soon.

Flower arrangements change depending on what occasion they are being designed for. The eight basic designs florists begin with are crescent, vertical, oval, Hogarth's curve, horizontal, triangular minimal and free standing. Each can be given a unique touch depending on the intention of the bouquet. Artistic designs often start with the crescent and table pieces focus mainly on the horizontal design.

Vertical arrangements are often used in corners or against wall due to the space available. Formal occasion may see oval or Hogarth's curve whereas triangular is often bold and makes a statement at ceremonial gatherings.

Insects may love flowers but they are not the only ones. Seeing a florists flower delivery van turning up on your doorstep is enough to make you feel special and spoiled and filling your house with fragrant blooms lifts the atmosphere with their colour and vibrancy. They welcome you home with life and warmth.
